Sigma international president keynote speaker for 2017 event

Johnathan A. Mason Sr., international president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., will be the keynote speaker for Saturday Brunch, an event co-sponsored by the Meridian chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

A celebration of the fraternity’s and sorority’s Founders’ Day, Saturday Brunch will be held Jan. 21, 2017. Held annually, Founders’ Day honors the legacies of the organization’s founders. Tickets are $35; additional details will be announced at a later date, according to Dr. Otis Gowdy, a fraternity spokesperson.

The 34th international president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Mason is a native of Abington, Pa. According to his bio, he attended Abington junior and senior high schools, where he excelled academically and athletically, and in 1995, received a bachelor of science degree in news and public affairs with a minor in public relations from Norfolk State University.

After graduation, Mason started his radio career in Norfolk as a marketing consultant. He moved to New York in 1997 to further his marketing career at 92.3 K-ROCK, home of the Howard Stern Radio Show. Mason was selected the 2000 New York Infinity Broadcasting Radio Marketing Consultant of the Year for his work with clients like Aamco Transmissions, Paramount Pictures, Bally Total Fitness and Coca-Cola.

In 2004, Mason was promoted to retail sales manager at 1010 WINS, the most successful radio station in the Infinity Radio Group. There, he managed a team of sellers that was responsible for generating new direct business in the most challenging marketplace in America.

In May, Mason stepped down as general sales Manager for 77 WABC Radio and Radio 103.9 FM in New York City after eight years in position and 20 years in the industry. He immediately formed JAM Media Solutions, a full-service advertising and marketing company.

Much of Mason’s time has been dedicated to community service through his fraternal and religious affiliations. In 1999 he founded Sigma’s Waging War Against Cancer, a national partnership between Phi Beta Sigma and the American Cancer Society.

In the 10 years the program has existed, Phi Beta Sigma has reached more than 250,000 people through the cancer awareness program.

Mason has received numerous awards and citations for his volunteer work, including the 1996 Portsmouth, Va., National Pan Hellenic Council Outstanding Frater Award; 1998 Nu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Liberty Bell Award Winner (Philadelphia, Pa.); 1998 Samuel B. Newton Eastern Regional Officer of the Year Award (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity); 1998 and 2000 Edgar B. Felton Eastern Region Service Award Recipient; 1999 National Social Action Outstanding Service Award Recipient (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Conclave); and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Man of the Year (Conclave 2001).

Mason has been a guest on several radio and television programs. He has also been featured in Crain’s Business Weekly, the American Society’s 2001 Annual Report, and the American Cancer Society’s Legislative Newsletter. In addition, he has appeared with motivational speaker and author Les Brown in a nationally distributed video focusing on prostate cancer.

Mason has served as International Director of Social Action and International First Vice President for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. On July 11, 2013, he was elected the 34th International President of this historic, 100-year-old organization.

Mason is an ordained Baptist minister and spends a great deal of time working for the church. He serves as pastor of Northeast Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa. He is also founder of Camp New Joy, Inc., which is being built on 20 acres of land in Rustburg, Va. Once completed, Camp New Joy will provide service to at-risk youth in communities all across this country and provide a life-changing experience.

Mason is married to the former Dionis A. Hussey of Baltimore, Md. The couple resides in East Orange, N.J., with their sons, Jonathan Andrew Jr. and Jackson Alexander.
