Rehearsals are in full swing as Stage 2’s talented young actors are gearing up to bring the beloved musical comedy “Guys and Dolls” to the McCain Theater stage June 28-30.
Three performances are scheduled with showtimes set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 28-29, and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 30.
“Guys and Dolls,” a vibrant and heartwarming comedy, unfolds in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City. The story, a delightful blend of romance and humor, follows a high-rolling gambler’s pursuit of a strait-laced missionary, all set against the backdrop of a colorful cast of gangsters, gamblers and showgirls.
With unforgettable songs like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” the Tony Award-winning show is a testament to the enduring power of musical comedy.
The Stage 2 production will feature two seasoned local theater performers, high school senior Maddie Clayton and recent graduate Brayden Alford, in leading roles.
Clayton, who has blossomed into a confident performer, will take on the role of Miss Adelaide, the fiancee of Nathan Detroit and a lead performer at the Hot Box nightclub. Meanwhile, Alford, who sharpened his skills as the lead in last summer’s Stage 2 production of “Joseph and Amazing the Technicolor Dreamcoat,” will charm the audience as Detroit, a good-hearted gambler and craps game organizer who will never hit the big time.
Clayton and Alford have been essential members of Stage 2 in recent years, and this performance marks one of their more memorable appearances with the group.
“‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ was my first main role in theater, and I took it as an opportunity to grow my theatrical skills and have a blast,” said Alford, who recently shared his reflections on his theatrical journey.
“However, ‘Guys and Dolls’ represents a final chance to get to know my castmates,” he said. “I knew a few Stage 2 members from other plays, but met so many more once I joined the organization. The best part about Stage 2 has been meeting a consistent group of people and forming long-lasting friendships. I see ‘Guys and Dolls’ as my last opportunity to share a show with these friends.”
Stage 2 is MCC’s theatrical training group for students ages 13 through college. The group offers a rich theater experience, involving students in all aspects of the production process.
Stage 2 members participate in committees focusing on costumes, set design, publicity and props. In addition, the group emphasizes character development, teamwork and community service, providing a well-rounded experience that extends beyond the stage.
Clayton, who has been on the Stage 2 leadership team for several years, said the group has given her more than just a chance to perform upon the stage.
“Being a part of Stage 2’s leadership team has been one of the most valuable opportunities ever,” she said. “I’ve learned so much responsibility and leadership skills that will benefit me as I enter my senior year of high school and even when I head off to college. Stage 2 has been a defining factor in my life. Not only has it been where I’ve met all of my best friends, but it has also given me a place to express and continue my love for theater. I am so excited for ‘Guys and Dolls’ this summer and all the fun it brings.”
The public is encouraged to attend the musical to support the community’s young performers.
Tickets for the musical’s three performances are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students. Admission is free with an MCC ID, but a ticket must be in hand for entry and may be obtained online at meridiancc.edu/fine_arts/arts_and_letters.
