JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi is standing by Tammy Wynette and naming a segment of road in memory of the late country music queen.
Gov. Haley Barbour signed a bill into law this week that says starting July 1, a segment of Mississippi Highway 23 will be designated the Tammy Wynette Memorial Highway.
The 17-mile stretch of road is in Itawamba County, where Wynette was born in 1942. She died in 1998.
Legislators in 1992 named the same road, near the Alabama state line, the Tammy Wynette Highway. The new law adds the word “memorial.”
One of Wynette’s top hits was the broken-heart anthem “Stand by Your Man.”
