Voter registration ends Monday for Nov. 5 election

Meridian and Lauderdale County residents planning to vote in the upcoming Nov. 5 election have less than a week to make sure their voter registration is in order.

In-person voter registration ends at 5 p.m. Monday and all mail-in voter registration forms must be postmarked by Monday for residents to be eligible to participate in this year’s elections.

On the ballot this year are several federal and state district races including president of the United States, state Supreme Court, one of Mississippi’s two U.S. Senate seats and more.

Appearing on the ballot for president are Democrat nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee former President Donald Trump. They will be joined on the ticket by Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Mississippi Constitution party candidate Randall Terry and independents Shiva Ayyadurai, Claudia De la Cruz and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Wicker is facing off against Democrat challenger Ty Pinkins. Pinkins previously ran for Secretary of State in the 2023 state elections in which he received 40.5% of the vote.

U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, who represents Mississippi’s third congressional district, which includes Lauderdale County, will also appear on the Nov. 5 ballot. Guest has represented District 3 in Congress since 2018 and is running unopposed.

Voters will also have a crowded field of contenders for state Supreme Court as five candidates vie for the District 1, Position 3 seat on the state’s highest court. On the ballot, Jenifer Branning, Byron Carter, Ceola James and Abby Gale Robinson are all challenging incumbent Jim Kitchens who has held the seat since 2009.

The winner of the Supreme Court seat will serve an 8-year term.

A race for state Court of Appeals Judge will also be on the ballot for Lauderdale County voters, with incumbent Jack Wilson running unopposed.

City of Meridian residents may see campaign signs for mayoral candidates going up around town, but mayoral elections are not on the Nov. 5 ballot. Meridian voters will select the next mayor and city council members in 2025.
