Jimmie Rodgers Music Festival changes format, begins May 3

This year’s Jimmie Rodgers Music Festival in Meridian scheduled for May 3-5 with a modified format.
And while last year brought acts such as country music sensation Wynonna Judd, Reckless Kelly, Brandy Clark, Cowboy Mouth, and Lydia Loveless on the city hall lawn, this year’s event structure eliminates the City Hall lawn concerts and instead offers a network of concerts at different venues.
The 2018 Jimmie Rodgers Talent Competition, normally held during the festival, has been postponed until September. According to the JRF website, the competition was moved “in celebration of Jimmie Rodgers’ birthday.”
As for the music performances, the shows will be held at five different venues.
According to a media release from JRF, singer/songwriters Paul Overstreet and Wynn Varble will be at the Temple Theater on May 3 to pay tribute to Jimmie Rodgers “and share their songs, stories and experiences.” The event starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are $20. Tickets go on sale March 19 through The Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience online site and at Meridian Underground Music.
Old Crow Medicine Show will begin 7:30 p.m., May 4 at the MSU Riley Center. Tickets are $43 and $37 and can be purchased at the MSU Riley Center box office or at www.msurileycenter.com.
Free pre-event and post-event concerts will be held at Dumont Plaza, including Clay Parker and Jodi James at 5:30 p.m. and Scott McQuaig & the Tomcats at 7:30 p.m.
Paul Thorn will take the stage of The MAX Amphitheater at 7 p.m. on May 5. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for general admission and go on sale March 19 at The MAX online ticket sales site.
The MAX Afterparty featuring Bishop Gunn in Concert, presented by the Jimmie Rodgers Music Festival and Magnolia Beverage, begins at 10 p.m. at The Hive Bar and Grill.
The cost is $10 at the door and free to Paul Thorn ticket holders.
