BASEBALL ROUNDUPS: West and Southeast advance to third round

One night after Ben Ethridge fanned a career-high 14 batters, teammate Kameron Partridge followed with another dominant performance from the mound.

Partridge crammed 12 strikeouts into seven innings Saturday as West Lauderdale defeated Poplarville 5-0 to sweep the Hornets in the second round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.

Partridge allowed just two hits, and he gave up one walk.

Offensively for West Lauderdale (25-3), Austin Davidson and Tanner Parker led the way. Davidson was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Parker tallied one hit and two RBIs in two at-bats. Both players hit doubles.

Partridge, Brett Mason, Braden Luke, Ben Ethridge, Mason Willis and Cade Kennedy tallied singles. Ethridge contributed an RBI.

West Lauderdale led 1-0 in the second inning before pouring on three more runs in the fourth. The Knights posted their fifth run in the sixth. 

Southeast Lauderdale 

The Tigers edged Seminary 7-6 Saturday to advance to the third round of the MHSAA Class 3A postseason.

Southeast Lauderdale (19-7) used the arms of Dakota Boney and Ryan Smith to secure Saturday’s series-sweeping win.

Boney tossed 76 pitches over four innings. He struck out two, walked five and gave up two earned runs.

Smith pitched three innings of two-hit ball. He tallied three strikeouts and yielded just one earned run.

Zach Flaskamp was 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run. Smith tripled to go 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run. Parker Wood was 2-for-4 with two runs. Braxton Anthony finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Neshoba Central

Saltillo rattled off 11 hits Saturday to nab a 16-8 win against Neshoba Central and send the second-round Class 5A series back to Philadelphia knotted at one.

Saturday’s win avenged a 6-5 Neshoba Central win in Game 1 Friday.

Saltillo’s Drew Capobianco, Ryan Melton, Evan McCarthy and Gage Thomas each posted two-hit contests. Thomas’ two hits were doubles, while McCarthy added a double.

Charles Miller, Capobianco and Thomas contributed two RBIs apiece.

Neshoba Central’s Cade Hall was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, one walk and one run. Mark Hunt finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, two walks and one run.

Saltillo’s Charles Miller earned the pitching win. Miller struck out eight and surrendered three earned runs over 4 and 1/3 innings. He walked six. 

Enterprise

Enterprise saw its season end with a 12-2 run-rule-shortened loss at Loyd Star Saturday in the second round of the MHSAA Class 2A postseason.

Loyd Star swept the series 2-0.

Hornets pitcher Dane Smith went five innings to secure the win.

Smith allowed just three hits, was tagged for two earned runs and struck out three Bulldog batters. He walked four.

Loyd Star’s James Beard hit two home runs — including a grand slam — and finished 2-for-2 with a team-high five RBIs. He drew two walks. Brent Cade was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Smith finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Enterprise trailed 2-0 to enter the third inning before Loyd Star erupted for seven runs in the frame.

The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Hornets responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Enterprise ended the season at 20-11. 

Choctaw Central 

The Warriors bounced back from a one-run loss Friday to take a 3-1, Game 2 win over Wesson Saturday.

Wesson won the rubber match 8-0 to end Choctaw Central’s season at 15-10.

In Game 1, Choctaw Central batters rattled off 11 hits.

Both Lucas Thomas and Tristan Gibson went 3-for-3, while Draven Cotton finished 2-for-3.

Cotton and Keyon Roach combined to give the Warriors two RBIs.

Cotton struck out 11 batters and yielded just five hits.

Roach was 2-for-3 in Game 2, while Cotton, Thomas and Zales Lewis (double) each had hits.

East Union won the series 2-0.
