ON THE GO: Music, Union Day events highlight weekend lineup

Lonne's George performs Friday evening at The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience as part of the New Artist Blues Series.

This weekend offers some good music beginning Friday at The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience with the New Artist Blues Series.

Music will be performed by Mississippi native, Lonn’e George. After leaving the Air Force, George performed with the legendary Duke Ellington and his band opened for acts such as James Brown.

In addition to blues, he will perform jazz and other forms of music. The event will be held at Maxie’s Juke Joint inside The MAX and admission is $20 for non-members and free for members. The MAX is located at 2155 Front St.

Many area and out-of-state bands will be performing Saturday at the Temple Theatre Ballroom for the Battle of the Bands competition from noon until 10 p.m. The event is sponsored by Meridian Underground Music and Magnolia Beverage Company.

All proceeds will benefit Care Lodge. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at MUM or the Care Lodge. The Temple is located at 2320 8th St., Meridian, with free parking across the street in the city parking garage.

Music from The Down East Boys and 2nd Mile in concert is scheduled at 6 p.m. Saturday at The Temple. These groups will perform the best in Southern Gospel music. Admission for the Artist Circle are $25-$35, general admission $15-$20 and children under 12 are free with a paying adult.

Union Day events

The Union Day Miss/Mister Summertime Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13 at the Union Mini Park on Bank Street, Union. Children ages one through 12 are eligible to participate as contestants for a $10 entry fee. The pageant is open to the public for a small admission fee.

Union Day Talent Showcase is planned at 7 p.m. Friday at the mini park and the deadline to enter is Thursday. There is a $20 entry fee for contestants.

Saturday kicks off the Union Day street festival from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the mini park. There will be political speakers, a magician, booths with arts and crafts, retail merchandise, food items, kids zone and food trucks. For more information call 713-449-2628.

Other events

• In an effort to raise awareness on mental health, Burgers at Bonita Lakes is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 13 at the first pavilion, sponsored by the National Alliance of Mental Illness, Meridian chapter. The organization is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental health. The event is free.

• There will be a craft beer tasting held at Bonita Lakes Mall from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday offering several choices of craft beer to sample. Must have ID to prove age for this event.

• Sunday is Father’s Day, so treat Dad to a delicious meal at any one of the area’s restaurants. There is everything from fine dining to soul food to choose from so let him know how much you appreciate all he does.
