The Fred’s store in Newton is on a list of Mississippi stores slated for closure, the company announced Friday.

The store, located at 304 Northside Drive, is among 49 stores in Mississippi and seven other states set to close. The closures also affect Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

The pharmacies located inside the closed stores will remain open, according to the company.

The closing of the Newton store follows the shuttering of two Fred’s stores in Meridian: the one on 22nd Avenue, which closed in May, and another on Eighth Street.

Fred’s decision to close additional underperforming stores follows a continued evaluation of the company’s portfolio, including historical and recent store performance and the timing of lease expirations, among other factors, according to a news release.
