SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jake Retzlaff engineered two fourth quarter scoring drives and Will Ferrin kicked a 44-yard field with four seconds remaining to keep No. 9 BYU’s unbeaten season alive with a 22-21 win over Utah. The Cougars’ final drive was extended on a defensive holding penalty on fourth down when the largest crowd in Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium history thought the game was over. The Cougars remain the final undefeated team in the Big 12 and in prime position for a bid in the conference championship game.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Shedeur Sanders threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, two-way star Travis Hunter had nine catches for 99 yards and a TD and No. 21 Colorado overcame an early deficit to beat Texas Tech 41-27 on Saturday. Sanders was 30 of 43 for 291 yards. Shilo Sanders, the other son of Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders on the team, recovered a fumble in the end zone with 51 seconds left. Colorado (7-2, 5-1 Big 12, No. 20 CFP) won its third consecutive game and is on pace to play in the Big 12 Championship Game with a chance to qualify for the 12-team College Football Playoff. Texas Tech is 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Devin Neal ran for 116 yards and two scores and became Kansas’ all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in a 45-36 win over No. 17 Iowa State at Arrowhead Stadium. Neal broke June Henley’s rushing record on his first carry and now has 3,951 yards. Neal scored his 42nd and 43rd rushing touchdowns to break Henley’s mark of 41. Jalon Daniels finished 12 of 24 for 295 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas. Rocco Becht was 24 of 37 for 383 yards and three TDs for Iowa State. The Cyclones have lost two straight after a 7-0 start.
UNDATED (AP) — Sam Leavitt threw three touchdown passes, two to Jordyn Tyson, and Arizona State held on to beat UCF 35-31. In a game that featured five lead changes, the Sun Devils (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) took the lead with 4:55 to play on Leavitt’s 13-yard pass to Tyson. Arizona State played without star running back Cam Skattebo, sidelined with a shoulder injury. RJ Harvey rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns for UCF (4-6, 2-5). But he was stopped on fourth-and-2 with 3:18 to play and the Knights did not get the ball back until 5 seconds remained. Arizona State scored two touchdowns in 9 seconds near the end of the first half to take a 21-17 lead at the break.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Josh Hoover passed for 287 yards and a touchdown, and TCU rolled past Oklahoma State 38-13. JP Richardson caught seven passes for 100 yards and Cam Cook ran for two touchdowns for the Horned Frogs. TCU scored on six of its first seven possessions to hand Oklahoma State its seventh straight loss. The Horned Frogs didn’t punt until halfway through the fourth quarter. The win makes TCU (6-4, 4-3 Big 12) bowl eligible again after missing out in 2023. Oklahoma State clinched its first losing season since 2005 — Mike Gundy’s first as head coach.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Nicco Marchiol threw for one touchdown and ran for another and West Virginia’s defense forced Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby into three turnovers Saturday afternoon, which led to 17 points in the Mountaineers 31-24 win over the Bearcats. It’s the fourth-straight win for the Mountaineers (5-4, 4-2 Big 12 Conference) over the Bearcats (5-4, 3-3), and they denied the Bearcats the opportunity to clinch bowl eligibility. Two of the Mountaineers takeaways were scoring plays. Tyrin Bradley Jr. scooped up a backwards pass from Sorsby and raced 14 yards for the touchdown. The play was reviewed and confirmed, giving the Mountaineers a 10-point lead with 3:30 left to play.
TUSCON, Ariz. (AP) — Tobe Awaka had 18 points and 15 rebounds and No. 10 Arizona dominated inside the paint and on the boards in a 102-44 nonconference win over Old Dominion on Saturday. Awaka, a junior forward who transferred from Tennessee, was 8 of 10 from the field and had eight of Arizona’s 24 offensive rebounds, its most in a game since 2005. Freshman Carter Bryant had 12 points and center Henri Veesaar added 10 points with nine boards for the Wildcats. Devin Ceaser scored 12 points for Old Dominion, which shot 31.6% and missed 11 of 17 free throw attempts. It was the most lopsided loss in school history for the Monarchs, topping a 111-65 defeat to Florida Christian in 1956.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah athletic director Mark Harlan blasted the Big 12 officiating crew following BYU’s 22-21 win over the Utes for controversial calls on the Cougars’ winning drive. Harlan took the podium shortly before players and coach Kyle Whittingham arrived. Harlan said the game was stolen and he will take his complaints to the Big 12 commissioner. Utah appeared to have stopped BYU twice on fourth down on the final drive. Both times, the play was wiped out by officials and the Cougars moved down the field and kicked the winning field goal with four seconds to play.
