Kassie Coleman sees challenge from Michael Grace for district attorney seat

Kassie Coleman, the newly appointed district attorney for the 10th Circuit Court, will face a challenge from Democrat Michael Grace in the Nov. 5 general election.   

Coleman, a Republican, was appointed to the office when long-serving District Attorney Bilbo Mitchell retired in October. The district covers Kemper, Lauderdale, Clarke and Wayne counties.

The deadline for those wishing to qualify was Friday. The list of candidates for county offices was available Friday, but the list of qualifying candidates for district attorney, state senator and state representative was released by the secretary of state’s office on Saturday.

Party primaries are Aug. 6, with the primary runoff on Aug. 27, if needed. The general election is Nov. 5. 

The deadline to register to vote in the August primary is 5 p.m. on July 8.

In the 8th Circuit Court, which covers Leake, Neshoba, Newton and Scott counties, Steven Kilgore of Philadelphia is unopposed. Kilgore was appointed to the post in 2017. 

State senate seats

For District 18, which covers Neshoba County and parts of Leake and Winston counties, incumbent Republican Jenifer Branning is unopposed.

In District 31, which covers Newton and Scott counties and northwest Lauderdale County, Hampton Gardner of Decatur will face Newton attorney Tyler McCaughn in the Republican primary. Terry C. Burton, who has held the seat since 1992, is retiring. The winner will face Democrat Mike Marlow in the general election.

In District 32, incumbent State Sen. Sampson Jackson II will see a challenge in the Democratic primary from Tavarris K. Cross Sr. The district covers parts of Winston and Noxubee counties, Kemper County and northeast Lauderdale County.

District 33 covers southern Lauderdale County and Clarke County. The seat, held by the retiring Republican Videt Carmichael, has two candidates: Erle E. “Bubby” Johnston and Jeff Tate, who will face off in a Republican primary.

State house seats

In District 44, which covers most of Neshoba County , incumbent Republican C. Scott Bounds is unopposed. 

In District 45, which covers Kemper County and northeast Lauderdale County, incumbent Democrat Michael T. Evans is unopposed. 

In District 78, which covers west Newton County and east Scott County, incumbent Republican Randy Rushing of Decatur will face Democrat Joe C. Bradford of Scott County in the general election.

In District 80, which covers southern Clarke County and southeastern Jasper County, incumbent Democrat Omeria Scott is unopposed.  

In District 82, which covers southern Lauderdale County and northeastern Clarke County, incumbent Democrat Charles Young Jr. is unopposed. 

In District 83, which covers northwest Lauderdale County, incumbent Greg Snowden faces challenger Billy Adam Calvert in the Republican primary.

In District 84, which covers central Clarke County, northeast Jasper County and eastern Newton county, incumbent William E. Shirley, Jr. faces challenger Troy Smith in the Republican primary. The winner will face Roy May, an independent candidate, in the general election.

In addition to state offices, countywide and county district offices will be on the ballot. Those offices are sheriff, county supervisors, chancery clerk, circuit clerk, tax assessor, tax collector, county attorney, surveyor, coroner, justice court judges and constables.
