In an online address Monday, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said he came in contact with a state legislator who had tested positive for COVID-19, and that he was awaiting his own test results.
“This virus is real,” Reeves said. “It is dangerous and it is spreading very, very rapidly.”
Reeves said health officials have been closely monitoring COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state, which reached a record high of 647 on Friday.
As of Sunday, records show 609 people were being hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infection and 216 others were being hospitalized with suspected infection.
“If the numbers continue to increase, if hospitalizations continue to increase, if number of ICU patients continue to increase, we will have to be willing and able to take action to decompress our hospital system,” Reeves said.
He said he has no desire to have to shut down businesses again.
“I will do everything in my power to protect not only the livelihoods of all Mississippians but also the lives of all Mississippians,” he said.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 357 new cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi Monday, for a total of 31,257 and three additional deaths, for a total of 1,114 deaths statewide.
In Lauderdale County, MSDH reported one new case of COVID-19, for a total of 910, with 79 total deaths.
Rush Health Systems shared new data Monday, showing its average weekly COVID-19 positive test results have dropped from a high of 45.7 percent in mid-April to 7.7 percent as of Sunday.
“Percent positive is defined as number of people with a positive test result, out of all people with COVID-19 testing completed at Rush Health Systems,” according to a statement on Rush’s records. “Early percentages are high because per CDC guidelines at the time, we were only testing those who presented with symptoms of COVID-19. In mid May, we began aggressive testing strategies that included in-house testing for all patients prior to an elective procedure leading to a dramatic decrease in percentage of positive test results.”
Rush’s records for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 show a high average of 33 patients during the week of April 12 and a low average of seven patients the week of June 20.
The counties with the highest case totals as of the latest update include Hinds (2536), Desoto (1620), Madison (1314), Jones (1128) and Neshoba (992).
Records show 207 cases and 24 deaths in Clarke County, 179 cases and 14 deaths in Kemper County, 992 cases and 71 deaths in Neshoba County and 339 cases and nine deaths in Newton County.
There are now 102 active outbreaks of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities, the health department said.
As of Sunday, 22,167 Mississippi residents were presumed recovered from COVID-19, according to MSDH.
Totals of all reported cases since March 11, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
