Mississippi reports 612 new COVID-19 cases; Lauderdale County adds 19

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 612 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, for a total of 69,986 and 22 additional deaths, for a total of 2,011 deaths statewide. 

In Lauderdale County, MSDH reported 19 new cases, for a total of 1,458 and one additional death, for a total of 94 deaths.

A video posted on the MSDH website this week warns, “If we don’t start making changes now, we’ll be forced to make cruel calculations later. Mississippi hospitals are overwhelmed. Not enough beds, not enough ICUs, not enough care for those who need it.” 

At Anderson Regional Medical Center Wednesday, two adult ICU beds out of 29 were available and 26 COVID-19 patients were being hospitalized, including 11 adults in the ICU, according to state data. 

Data for Rush Foundation Hospital for Wednesday shows the hospital had four adult ICU beds out of 23 available and 20 COVID-19 patients were being hospitalized, including eight adults in the ICU. 

As of Thursday’s update, records show 949 Mississippi residents were being hospitalized with COVID-19 and 187 more were being treated for suspected infection. 

Records show 355 cases and 28 deaths in Clarke County, 241 cases and 14 deaths in Kemper County, 1,309 cases and 94 deaths in Neshoba County and 567 cases and 11 deaths in Newton County. 

Health officials reported 178 active outbreaks of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities. 

As of Sunday, 49,836 people in Mississippi were presumed recovered from COVID-19, according to the health department.
