Longtime Lauderdale County Supervisor Joe Norwood Sr. announced his candidacy Wednesday for state House District 82.
Gov. Tate Reeves declared a special election for District 82 following the death of Rep. Charles Young Jr., who died on Dec. 19.
“It is with a heavy heart that I seek this role, as Rep. Young was a dedicated public servant and a dear friend,” said Norwood. “I hope to honor his legacy by continuing to serve our community with integrity and commitment.”
Norwood, who has spent more than two decades in public service, represents many of the same constituents as the supervisor for Lauderdale County’s District 4 as he would under House District 82. Throughout his time in office, he said he has been a vocal supporter of education, healthcare, public safety and economic development.
“My goal is to ensure that the voices in the Lauderdale County community are heard at the state level,” he said. “I am committed to advocating for the needs of our residents and working towards a brighter future for Lauderdale County.”
The deadline for candidates to qualify for the District 82 race is 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. The special election will be held March 25 with a runoff date of April 22.
