A Lauderdale County grand jury wrapped up its January 2025 term last week, delivering indictments in criminal cases and recommending improvements to county facilities.

In its report, the grand jury announced a total of 121 incitements were handed down over the two-day session, and no indictment was returned in three cases.

The grand jury also reported touring the Lauderdale County Detention Facility, which it found to be outdated, although clean and safe.

“The grand jury recommends that the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors begin planning for the building of a new detention facility or the renovation of the current facility,” the grand jury wrote in its report.

Similar findings have been reported by previous grand juries, and county officials have discussed a need for a new detention facility in the near future. Built in 1998, the Lauderdale County Detention Facility can house up to 290 inmates.
