Hard freeze on the way

Meridian and Lauderdale County residents are encouraged to break out the blankets this weekend as freezing temperatures are expected to make themselves at home for a few days.
The National Weather Service in Jackson is forecasting an extended period of below freezing temperatures beginning Sunday night. Once the cold arrives, temperatures are not expected to reach above freezing for 48 to 72 hours.
The extended cold will bring with it dangerously low wind chill temperatures, frozen pipes and the potential for hypothermia or frostbite with prolonged exposure to the elements, the NWS said in its forecast.
Not yet clear in the forecast is whether or not the Magnolia State will see more snow or other winter precipitation from the cold weather event.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast heading into the weekend as conditions change and more data becomes available.
