Deadfall game calls

Joey Rose sent out a few sweet love yelps on his slate call and paused a few seconds before calling again. Gobble . . . geobble, obble obble thundered an old gobbler just out of sight. The gobbler made a beeline to Rose like he was the hottest hen in the woods.

Ka-boom roared Rose’s shotgun and another gobbler fell at the hands of the young master. “There’s just something about fooling an old gobbler with a call you made yourself,” said Rose. It didn’t take long for Rose to develop his own line of calls as his first bird lit a spark of desire that has fanned into a flaming passion for making calls and calling up ducks, bucks and turkeys.

“I wanted to make something to kill my own stuff with,” Rose said. And he’s been successful beyond his dreams as Rose has made calls and harvested just about everything that swims, crawls and flies in Mississippi.

But there was just one problem, Rose had become so successful at making his calls that the demand for them was more than he could meet and still be able to hunt too.

“It was to the point that I was going to have to make a few for fun, or quit making them altogether, or find somebody to help me do it right,” said Rose. And that’s where Patrick Allen came into the picture and formed a partnership with Rose. Allen and Rose met while turkey hunting and quickly learned that they had a common interest, turkey hunting, so it was a natural fit.

“I’ve been making stuff with wood ever since I could hold a tool,” said Patrick Allen. “Joey wanted to do more with his calls and make more and I enjoy making them too so we formed a partnership.”

While Allen had made things out of wood his entire life, he’d never made anything to sell, and that’s where Rose’s expertise came into the picture, along with his hunting and call making knowledge.

Rose developed a line of calls that included turkey, duck, deer, and owl and now they’re also making squirrel calls, coon squalls and a line of beautiful cutting boards.

A recent trip to the Canton Flea Market was a huge success and the newly formed company sold out of squirrel calls of all things. Kids love squirrel calls and Allen’s son Jack is no different.

“My son Jack heads to the woods every time he gets home and uses that squirrel call to get the squirrels chattering,” Allen said. “He’ll start chattering on that thing and every squirrel in the area starts communicating back with him and before long he’s killing squirrels.” It’s a locator call that gets them stirred up.

While Allen likes to deer hunt when he’s by himself, he really loves squirrel hunting with dogs, especially with the kids. When asked to comment on which he likes best, he just couldn’t choose: “I guess I like to hunt it all.”

“Ain’t no doubt turkey hunting is my favorite, but duck hunting is mighty close too” said Rose. There’s only one thing better than making calls and killing game with them, and that’s sharing their hunting passion with youngsters and other hunters. Rose and Allen are committed to making calls and promoting ethical hunting in the outdoors.
