Kilpatrick column: No shortage of receivers in Fantasy this season

Published 4:00 am Friday, August 14, 2015

I grew up in Philadelphia and remember going to swim at the country club on really hot summer days like this.

As a young boy, the deep end seemed so deep to me, although it was only 10 or 12 feet. I remember jumping off the diving board, swimming straight down, the pressure pushing in on my ears, my lungs feeling like they would burst and finally feeling like I had climbed Mount Everest when I touched the bottom of that abyss. Those were good times.

Well, as I stand on the diving board of this year’s draft, the wide receiver pool looks a lot like that deep end. There are a lot of elite wide receivers, there are a lot of great wide receivers and there are a lot of good wide receivers. Depending on where I end up drafting, I could easily take a wide receiver in the first round and maybe the second round as well, although I hope not. I might even have three wide receivers before I ever select a quarterback.

However if you don’t get 2-3 of the elite/great players, don’t worry, there are guys that are in the final tier of my rankings today that could easily end up as top-10 players.

Top tier

1. Antonio Brown

2. Julio Jones

3. Demarius Thomas

4. Dez Bryant

5. Calvin Johnson

6. Odell Beckham Jr.

These guys are the elite of the elite. They should strongly be considered as first-round draft picks, and if not should not make it outside of the beginning of the second round. They are all physically superior, the No. 1 targets on their team, they all have good quarterbacks throwing to them and, barring injury, will all finish in the top 10 this season. If you don’t get one of the top four or five running backs, then you should make sure you get one of them.

Also great players

7. Jordy Nelson

8. A.J. Green

9. Randall Cobb

10. Alshon Jeffery

11. Mike Evans

These guys are outstanding prospects as well. They could very easily be second-round picks, and certainly early third round if not, and all have a great chance to finish in the top 10 as well. The main difference in these guys and those above is that these have slight question marks. Either their quarterback is questionable (Green, Jeffery, Evans), or they are splitting targets with another great receiver (Nelson and Cobb). So where the first round should really be running back-heavy at the top, the second round should be receiver-heavy all the way through!

More questions, but still talented

12. T.Y. Hilton

13. Brandon Cooks

14. Deandre Hopkins

15. Emmanuel Sanders

In the third round you will see some guys reaching for quarterbacks they like, or reaching for tight ends, but don’t fall for the peer pressure. Stick with your board, and your board should have you taking a solid No. 2 running back or one of these guys in the third round, unless an elite quarterback or tight end is available. To me, these guys are safer than third-tier running backs if you have to make that decision. So if you can’t get a second-tier running back, Luck or Rodgers or the No. 1 tight end — more on that next week — then take one of these guys and be glad you did.

Available while supplies last

16. Jordan Mathews

17. Kelvin Benjamin

18. Julian Edelman

19. Amari Cooper

20. Andre Johnson

Honestly, I still really like a lot of the guys in this section. Mathews, Benjamin and Edelman are really solid players that looked great last year and should lead their teams in targets. Cooper is unproven at this level but has the talent to end up being a top-15 or even top-10 wide receiver. Andre Johnson has all of his physical ability with the arm of Andrew Luck this year, which could be a dangerous mix. Don’t count these guys out, because the wide receiver pool is deep this year. These guys should go in the fourth or fifth rounds depending on your needs at that point, but don’t take a third wide receier before your second running back.

Extras because of depth

21. Keenan Allen

22. Jarvis Landry

23. Brandon Marshall

24. Golden Tate

25. Jeremy Maclin
