After writing dozens of inspirational gospel plays, Meridian native Alonzo Williams is bringing one of those plays to his hometown.

Williams is coming back to Meridian to bring a production of “Running out of Time” to the Temple Theater at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8.

Williams was born in Hollandale but grew up in Meridian, where he graduated from MHS in 1999. He later earned degrees from Meridian Community College and The University of Southern Mississippi.

Williams became interested in the performing arts at an early age, and was part of a singing group when he was in school. During his time at MCC, he took classes under the direction of Elliot Street, which inspired him to get into acting.

Williams later started an organization in Hattiesburg called Southern Inspiration of Praise, which is a a non-profit drama ministry. Since them, he’s been able to  travel and produce his stage plays.

“I never thought I would be writing plays,” Williams said. “But I believe writing is a gift I have. I love spending time on a storyline and encouraging people through my stage productions.”

As for “Running out of Time,” Williams wanted to put on the play last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed those plans. He made it his mission to produce the play this year, because people need hope, he said.

“We wanted to put something on stage that will inspire the community,” he said. “To inspire those who have lost loved ones and inspire those going through a difficult time.”

Tickets for the play can be purchased at www.vtheaw.com, Houston Shelter Insurance at 1601 14th Street and Sam’s Fashions.
