- Danny Hill of H&H Construction stands in front of two of 20 antique cars that will be auctioned. Hill stands to make about $2 million when the cars sell.
Danny Hill has been collecting cars for nearly 40 years and has accumulated a large inventory of antique and custom cars.
“Most of these cars I’ve had close to 38 years,” Hill said.
The love Hill has for antique cars began with a dearly-loved family member.
“It was all my daddy, William Edward Hill,” Hill said. “He loved the car races. We used to go to them all the time. Me and my son, Michael, collected cars and then my daughter, Michelle, got involved helping us find the cars, so we just had a good time doing it.”
Hill, 70, said he is phasing out of his car collecting days.
“I’ve lost a bit of interest in them,” Hill said. “I feel like the generation gap is about to change. The young kids coming up today don’t care about cars today like this. That’s how I feel, and I may be wrong. Of course this generation coming up doesn’t really have the money to buy cars like this.”
Hill said he recently made the difficult decision to sell his inventory.
“Since these cars have been advertised; we’ve had people who have flown in from California and Denver, Colorado,” said Hill, who is putting all of his cars up for action.
The steady stream of visitors is from those wanting to preview the cars prior to their sale.
Hill is auctioning his vehicles through Mecum Auctions, which specializes in collector car, vintage and antique motorcycle sales. Mecum conducts auctions all over the U.S., which are aired on NBCSN.
While Hill’s garage is filled with antiques cars; those aren’t his only collectables. His garage is lined with vintage signs, gasoline pumps and much more.
“I love antiques in general,” Hill said. “We have a lot at my mothers house, a lot at my house. People have wanted me to open up this place as a museum at one point, and charge people to come in here, but I never would do it.”
Even though Hill is giving up something he has loved for many years, he expects to do well on his investment in collectable cars..
“I stand to make about $2 million,” Hill said. “If you take the 20 cars I have here, I probably have about $300,000 in them.”
While the money will be nice, Hill admits it will still be a difficult transition.
“I’m going to miss it. I hate to see all of this leave Meridian, because there’s not a whole lot of people who have collections like this, or in the whole state of Mississippi for that matter,” said Hill, who owns H&H Construction Company, which has been in business for 31 years.
