Hot rod classics, Boy Scouts and a Pinewood Derby will featured in the old Red Hot parking lot on North Frontage Road Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Local businesses are teaming up to sponsor the event that will benefit area Boy Scouts through United Way.
Sponsors are Long John Silvers, A&W Restaurant, Tony’s Hot Rod Shop and Quality Paint & Body. The event will feature a car, truck and motorcycle show, plenty of Boy Scout popcorn and a mock Pinewood Derby race, along with live entertainment by Kabana Productions, door prizes, games, kids’ activities, and family fun.
There is no cost to attend the event. There is no fee for children to participate in the Pinewood Derby, but donations will be accepted.
There is a $20 entry fee for those who wish to enter their car, truck or motorcycle in the auto show. Trophies and a 50/50 cash pot will be awarded, with all proceeds benefitting the Boy Scouts of America Choctaw Area Council.
“This show for automobile and bike enthusiasts of all ages is always a huge event and we are honored that United Way has been selected as one of the charities to be recognized. We are very grateful to A&W, Long John Silvers, Tony’s HotRod Shop and Quality Paint & Body for sponsoring this family fun event. Come on out and join us in this RED HOT event,” said Thad Quarles, CEO of United Way of East Mississippi.
Choctaw Area Council-BSA Scout Executive Ken Kercheval said the auto show and derby would be a great time for Scouts and their Units to get out in the community and “do something different.”
“This is going to be a fun activity for families and we are excited to be a part of it, and certainly honored to be picked as a benefactor,” Kercheval said, adding that area Scouts are invited to bring their Pinewood Derby cars to participate in the mock race. “We will set up the track for them. It should be a lot of fun.”
“This is also a great opportunity for our Scouts and our Units to sell our gourmet microwave and pre-popped popcorn. This is something we do every fall just like the Girl Scouts sell cookies. We use it to fund Camp Binachi, as well as our operating and recruiting efforts. It’s really a three-fold benefit for the Scouts, their units and the council,” Kercheval said.
Bud Power, operator of the local Long John Silvers/A&W Restaurant, said he hopes the community supports the Boy Scouts fund-raising event as well as they did for a similar event in 2011, where money was raised for tornado victims through the United Way.
“We had really good participation in 2011. We had probably 30 or 40 cars out here and we had a lot of people come out and show their support. I’m looking forward to raising money this year for the Boy Scouts and the United Way. It’s just one way that we can give back to the community. With the excitement of the car show and the pinewood derby, it’s just going to be a very festive occasion,” Power said.
“It will be a lot of family fun, but the main point is this is something going on here that people in our community can get behind,” he added.
