MPD seeks suspect in Thursday fatal shooting

The Meridian Police Department is asking the public for help locating a suspect in a fatal shooing Thursday that left one person dead.

Jontae Lawan Portis, 25, is wanted for capital murder in connection with a fatal shooting which took place around 10:20 p.m. at Oak Manor Apartments. Coroner Stella McMahan identified the victim as 19-year-old Justin Phillips and said his body will be taken for an autopsy.
Acting Capt. Dareall Thompson said those helping Portis evade authorities will also see consequences.
“Anyone who knows his whereabouts or is trying to hide him will definitely face charges,” he said.
