County ponders equipment auction

An auction house wants to sell heavy equipment that the county is no longer using.

Deanco Auction from Philadelphia brought a proposal to the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors on Thursday, offering to sell tractors, dump trucks and other equipment that is no longer being used by the county.

At a supervisor’s work session, Deanco’s Pendy Ellard said they would like to include Lauderdale County’s equipment in a contractor’s equipment sale scheduled for March 27-28. Equipment from other counties will be for sale at the auction as well.

Buyers often prefer purchasing equipment that has been previously owned by a governmental agency, Ellard said.

“They know, generally, it was bought new by you all. They know that it’s generally better maintained than equipment owned by individuals or contractors,” Ellard said. “They know that the hours are going to be correct. They have more confidence in the quality of the stuff because it’s from the county. They believe that what they see is what they are really going to get so they’ll pay a premium price for it.”

Eight 2008 dump trucks are among items that will be auctioned, if the Board of Supervisors approves the agreement.

Other equipment on the auction list includes tractors, pickup trucks, a backhoe, a van, cars, a voting machine, grass cutting equipment, and numerous other items.

Bidding will only be allowed on the days of the sale and online bidding is available.

The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the matter when they meet on Monday. The meeting begins at 9 a.m.
