Like many women, Brittany Davis Morris is passionate about fashion. However, her interest goes far beyond deciding what to wear from day to day.

    Three years ago while living in Boston, Mass., the Meridian native started the blog “Brilliance of B” to, as she notes in the site’s introduction, push herself creatively and to explore her style sense. Morris not only talks about the latest fashion trends, but also offers style and accessory advice as well as introduces complementary items, such as makeup, nail and hair products and tools.

    The blog also features photos of Morris modeling some of her own fashion creations. While those photos are usually reserved for the site, two of them can currently be seen in InStyle Makeover, a special issue of the popular magazine that features favorite style tips – from the best cuts of 2012 to fall must-haves.

    It was while reading the April issue of InStyle, that Morris noticed a request to readers.

    “It said if you submitted pictures of yourself wearing something that was inspired by InStyle, you might be featured in the magazine,” she said. “I thought, ‘Okay, I might as well as try.'”

    To her surprise, Morris was contacted by a representative of the fashion magazine. The rep asked her a few questions about herself, as well as Morris’ fashion style. However, she did not say whether she would be featured in the magazine.

    “I sort of had to hear it from someone else,” Morris said. “I was on Facebook and someone said, ‘Brittany, you’re in InStyle.'”

    Two of four photos Morris submitted are featured in the special issue, which arrived on news stands in mid-September.

    “I thought it was going to be in one of the regular issues, but the Makeover edition is even better because it’s on stands longer, for a couple of months,” she said.

    

From fashion savvy

to fashionista

    Morris’ love for fashion started at a young age. In fact, before she blogged, she logged.

    “I used to write down what I was wearing every day so I wouldn’t wear the same thing,” she said. “I had a calendar I wrote it on to keep up with it.”

    Morris considered a career in fashion, however that idea was quickly thwarted by her mother.

    “I wanted to go to AIU (American InterContinental University) in Atlanta, but my mama told me I couldn’t go,” she said with a laugh.

    Instead, Morris earned a degree in computer science from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., in 2004, and became an engineer. However, the fashion world kept beckoning for her.

    “I’ve always liked fashion and people were always complimenting me on what I was wearing or asking where I’d purchased something,” she said of her style, which she describes as very classic, coupled with the occasional trendy item.

    “I like to try a couple of trends, but I do like to keep everything subtle and classic,” she said. “I love color, but I also like to wear all black one day; go for that simple style.”

    So Morris started a fashion blog – more or less as a hobby. Not only was response to the site positive, it took off in ways she never anticipated. And provided opportunities she never dreamed of.

    “I met a lot of other bloggers from the Boston area. They were going to events – store openings, charity events and fashion shows of some of the country’s top designers – and invited me to come with them,” she said. “After awhile, I began to make my own contacts with store owners and fashion designers, and it kind of snowballed into me going to other events and writing about them on my blog.”

    In 2010, Morris was not only invited to Boston Fashion Week – which features new, innovative, edgy locals, as well as established designers – she also was among press representatives for noted fashion designer Betsey Johnson at her Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show.

    Last year, when a newlywed Morris moved to Houston, Texas, she began an internship as a photo editor for PaperCity Magazine.

    “It’s a style and on-the-scene type magazine where they go to different parties here and take pictures of people and what they are wearing, as well as talk about all of the latest designers, including those here in Houston,” she said. “I’m really enjoying it.”

    Morris said she hopes to continue to work in the fashion industry, either as a writer or photo editor for a fashion magazine.

    And while she now lives in Texas with her husband, Trevor, Morris remains true to her Mississippi roots. The daughter of Bobby and Vickie Davis continues to use her Meridian cell phone number.

    “I can’t get rid of my number,” she said. “They just told me I have to get a Texas license, I’m like, Oh, my goodness!”
