“Education,” Bryant said. “We will be addressing teachers and the students so that we can bring our instructors and students to a higher level.”
Bryant said a study conducted by Mississippi State University has prompted him to unveil a plan in regard to performance compensations for teachers. He said compensation should be based not on tenure alone but on how well the teachers and instructors perform in the classrooms.
Another educational initiative Bryant hopes to marshal in is tentatively called “Third Gate.” Bryant explained his wish for all students to be able to read on the third grade level prior to entering the fourth grade. He said if they can’t meet this criteria then the student should be held back until third grade reading proficiency is attained.
“We have to make sure our children have reached that level before continuing with their education,” Bryant said.
Bryant also wants to raise the level of education for students who are seeking a career in teaching so that when they step into the classroom they are the best trained teachers who can meet the challenges of today’s educational needs.
“It is all about challenging these students who want to teach our young people,” Bryant said. “We have to ensure we have the best, highest quality individuals who will lead and nurture our young people.”

Lastly, Bryant stressed the need for a state school superintendent. He said in the past the state has had some excellent superintendents and he said along with the state school board, the best individual possible will be chosen to lead the state’s educational needs and programs.
