Inmate’s death ruled suicide

    Officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections said Saturday an inmate found unresponsive in his jail cell committed suicide.

    MDOC officials said Recardo Harris was found unconscious in his cell at the Kemper County Regional Correctional Facility at 1:28 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17. Officials said Harris was transported to John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital in DeKalb where he was later pronounced dead.  

    Officials said preliminary information indicated the death was a suicide.

    According to MDOC records, Harris, 30, was serving a 15-year sentence for armed robbery out of Lauderdale County and eight years for aggravated assault out of Neshoba County.

    The death is being investigated by the Kemper County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, MDOC officials said.
