Graveside services for James Lavelle Harris will be held today at 2 P.M. at Newton County Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ken McLemore officiating. Burial will be in Newton County Memorial Gardens. Newton County Funeral Home North, 9998 Hwy 15 North, Newton, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Harris, 86, of Kosciusko, formerly of Newton, died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at MS State Veteran’s Home. He was born April 24, 1924 in Lawrence. He was retired from the United States Navy, serving his country during World War II in the Pacific Campaign, and the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. After he retired from the military he worked at Jimmy Smith’s Service Station in Newton for many years. He was also proud of his twenty one years service with the Newton Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his nieces: Peggy Kite Harvey & husband Ronnie, of Lake; Polly Brown of Ft. Worth, TX; Minsie Anders Jordan, of Newton, and Jean Rainer of Bay Springs; his nephews: Maurice Yarbrough of Maricopa, AZ and Jim Williams of Newton; several great & great-great nieces & nephews
He was preceded in death by his wife: Reva L. (Grimsley) Harris and his parents: James (Jim) & Millie (Thrash) Harris.
Pallbearers will be Brian Kelly, Charles Kelly, Steve Hedrick, Ricky Maske, Ron Davis, and Kent Wheeler.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 1 P.M. until 1:50 P.M. at the funeral home.
