Area Roundup: MCC shuts down Kaskaskia

Meridian Community College starter Blake Hennington silenced the Kaskaskia bats Friday at Scaggs Field. Behind Hennington’s seven shutout innings and 12 strikeouts, the Eagles won 5-2.

Wile Hennington was shutting down Kaskaskia, former West Lauderdale standout Darren Farmer and Meridian High product Kenny Roberts were powering the MCC offense. Farmer doubled in a run with two outs in the first inning to stake the Eagles to a 1-0 lead. Roberts then added a two-out RBI single in the second following a single and stolen base from Kenny Sanders.
Leading just 2-0, MCC struck for a pair of runs in the seventh as Farmer doubled in his second run of the game to plate Jonathan Pace. Avi Ahlzadeh then hit a sacrifice fly to score Ben Kingsley, who also scored in the first.
After Kaskaskia rallied with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, Roberts answered with his sixth home run of the season.
MCC (11-5) hosts Kaskaskia at 2 p.m. Sunday on Poplar Springs Elementary Day at Scaggs Field.
The Eagles, who were scheduled to face Bossier Parrish in Vicksburg on Tuesday, will now face Bossier Parrish at Bazinsky Field in Vicksburg on Monday.

The Knights rallied past the visiting Tigers on Friday with two runs in the sixth and the game-winner in the seventh.
Southeast scored six in the first before West rallied with four in the bottom half. The Knights then plated one in the second and tacked on three in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. The Tigers, though, regained the lead with three in the fifth before adding one more run in the sixth.
However, after West tied it in the bottom of the sixth, C.C. Lawn drove in the winning run with the bases loaded in the seventh. Lawn had two RBIs on two hits. Haleigh Moffett had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Emily Pogue drove in one run on two hits.
Kaitlin Polk (1-1) earned the win in relief of Stephanie Kinard in the fifth inning. Bre Roulier suffered the loss for Southeast, while Paige Sheppard had two doubles and two RBIs for the Tigers.
West visits Northeast Jones on Tuesday.

Kirkland records ace at Lakeview
Nathan Kirkland aced the seventh hole at Lakeview Golf Course on Feb. 20, using a 6-iron. Witnesses of the hole-in-one on the 172-yard hole were Matt Driggers, Trey Robinson and Lydia Kirkland.

Northwest Mississippi 2-2
East Central scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second in winning Wednesday’s opener at Northwest.
The Warriors got a double and RBI from both Hailey Chisolm and Brittney Cochran, while Lauren Nicholas had two singles and a stolen base. Taylor Bailey improved to 3-1with eight strikeouts in a complete game.
In the nightcap, East Central again got off to a fast start with five runs in the second inning. After Northwest answered with a pair in the third, the Warriors tacked on two in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
Kasie Buckley improved to 5-0 with a complete game. She struck out one, while allowing only the two unearned runs. Offensively, the Warriors were paced by Summer Alexander’s four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Nicholas added three singles and an RBI and Chisolm had two singles and an RBI.

Holmes women 1
The Warriors evened their record at 3-3 by rolling past host Holmes on Thursday. In doubles, Elise Gibbs and Rachel Ramirez of East Central beat Kayla Perry and Taylor Morgan 8-3. In singles, Gibbs beat Jennifer Holland 6-1, 6-2; Ramirez lost to Kayla Perry 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Hannah Peoples beat Morgan 6-4, 6-2.

The Warriors (2-4) swept through the doubles matches, with Colton Amis and Dee Walker beat Tye Steele and Joseph Dees 8-4, Jason Hancock and Will Marston beat Chris Houghton and Will Brunson 8-3, Zac White and Matt Griffin beat Tanner McGraw and Jeffery Arnold 8-0. In singles, Amis beat Steele 6-0, 6-4; Marston 6-0, 6-4; White lost to Dees 6-1, 6-4; Hancock beat Houghton 6-0, 6-3; Walker beat Arnold 6-4, 6-1 and Griffin beat Josh Pinkard beat 6-3, 5-0 (retired).
