Pushmataha Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution

    New officers were appointed at a recent meeting of the Pushmataha Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. It was the club’s first meeting at Northwood Country Club.

    Marilyn Bell is the chapter’s new regent. Officers include: Julie Porter, vice regent; Jacqueline Gordon, chaplain; Angela Howington, recording secretary; Julie Rowell, corresponding secretary; Sue Thompson, treasurer; Louise Williamson, registrar; Dawn Davidson, historian; and Mahala Roberts, librarian.

    Guest speaker for the meeting was Dr. Wayne Porter, area horticulture agent, Mississippi State University Extension Service, who discussed heirloom plants.

    “Where did they come from? And how did they get here?” Porter inquired at the beginning of his presentation. He also talked about the various types of heirloom plants.

    After the meeting was called to order by Bell, the group received the DAR Ritual, the Pledge of Allegiance, Salute to the Mississippi Flag and the American’s Creed.

    Howington read the National Defense Report. Bell reminded the club that DAR will celebrate Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23. Rowell presented the Indian Minute.

    During the business session, Thompson presented the treasurer’s report. Shirley Stodard requested anyone interested in renewing their subscription to the DAR magazine to contact her.

    Williamson provided members two articles on genealogy, and informed the group that the NSDAR is working on a genealogy project and is seeking volunteers. Bell reminded the club that Rosalie is seeking hostesses for the fall and spring pilgrimages. Some dresses are available or participants can wear their own.

    Bell thanked hostesses Elease Duell, chairman, Gwen Burt, Dona Hodges, Opal Mitchell and Suzanne Stokes.

    Also attending the meeting were Linda Allred, Zexa Alman, Mary Billups, Nell McMullen, Joann McRae, Gayle Tyner, Susan VanZandt and Kay Wolfe.

    The club’s next meeting is scheduled Nov. 9 at noon at Northwood County Club.
