State’s Russell, Ole Miss’ Bounds among freshmen to earn academic SEC honors

    Mississippi State placed six members of its football team on the 2010 Freshmen SEC Academic Honor Roll, the league announced on Monday, which included Tyler Russell.

    Ole Miss placed 35 athletes total on the Honor Roll, a list that included golfer Chad Bounds.

     The six football players named to the honor roll are the second-most in the SEC this year, and tops last season’s five honorees.

     To be named to the Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

    Russell, a former Meridian High standout, is focusing on physical education.

    Bounds, who starred at Lamar before heading to the Rebels, is an undecided liberal arts major.
