ROUNDUP (March 4-5, 2022): Powe, Northeast Lauderdale Lady Trojans get 11-1 win vs. Meridian

Kennedi Powe finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Northeast Lauderdale as the Lady Trojans beat Meridian High School 11-1 in Friday night prep softball action at Northeast Lauderdale.

Kayla Watson went 2-for-3 with a triple for Northeast Lauderdale, while Kailee Price and Lindy Williams also hit triples. Leadoff hitter Raven Ramsey finished 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.

Price got the win, pitching five innings and giving up one run on two hits and six walks while striking out six. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

For Meridian, Jada Green hit a triple, and Jazlynn Sulton had a double. Sulton pitched 5 1/3 innings, surrendering 11 runs, four earned, on 13 hits and four walks while striking out five.

NORTHWEST RANKIN 3, WEST LAUDERDALE 1 

Breelyn Cain had a strong performance on the mound, but the Lady Knights were unable to get a hit in a two-run loss to Northwest Rankin Friday.

Cain pitched all seven innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine. McKinley Maxwell had the Lady Knights’ lone RBI. 

Victoria Irby and Addison Cornish both had steals for the Lady Knights.

Prep Baseball

CLARKDALE 2, WAYNE ACADEMY 1

Houston Wedgeworth doubled twice and drove in a run for Clarkdale as the Bulldogs edged Wayne Academy in Friday night prep baseball action at Wayne Academy.

Walker Swearingen went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, and he also got the win on the mound, giving up just one hit and striking out three in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Cal Culpepper got the start for Clarkdale, pitching 4 1/3 innings and surrendering one run on three hits while striking out six.

NORTHEAST LAUDERDALE 10, LOUISVILLE 0

Jake McElroy and Kaleb Shelby combined for the shutout for the Trojans as they run-ruled Louisville Friday on the road.

McElroy pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and only surrendering one hit, while Kaleb Shelby tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief, striking out three and giving up two hits.

Mitchell Butler was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs, and Chance Guisgong finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Caden Pearsell also had two RBIs for Northeast Lauderdale.

WEST LAUDERDALE 22, LEAKE CENTRAL 0

Ian Herrington had a no-hitter and 10 strikeouts in four innings of work for the Knights as they run-ruled Leake Central Friday at Leake Central.

Cade Kennedy hit a home run for West Lauderdale and finished 2-for-4, and Owen Shirley finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Jackson Parker went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, and Cannon Graham was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Cooper Luke had a double for West Lauderdale, and Bradon Epting hit a triple.

The game was called after four innings due to the mercy rule.

LAMAR 6, NEWTON COUNTY 3

Ross Polizzi hit a home run for Lamar as the Raiders edged Newton County Saturday at home.

Ty Wiggins pitched 6 2/3 innings for Lamar, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four. John Powell got the last out in the seventh inning with a strikeout for the save.

Ty Herrington was 2-for-3 at the plate for Lamar, and Eli Huebner and Polizzi both drive in two runs.

For Newton County, Tyson Wood finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Hayden Amis also hit a double. Gage Hollingsworth took the loss on the mound, yielding six runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out five. Gatlin Huber tossed three scoreless innings for the Cougars in relief.
