Northeast Lauderdale senior Brianna Robbins went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles, while also adding two runs and two RBIs to help power the Lady Trojans past Southeast Lauderdale High School 11-5 Monday night.
With the win, the Lady Trojans moved to 8-5 on the season.
“I think we came out here and did a very good job defensively, and mostly everybody did their jobs at the plate,” Robbins said. “I just try my best to keep everybody up whether I’m doing bad or doing well because it really doesn’t depend on me, it depends on us as a whole.”
The Lady Trojans received a team effort in the road win as Northeast Lauderdale hitters combined for 14 hits.
In the top of the first inning, Tot Cole knocked in Molly Moore with a double to give Northeast Lauderdale an early 1-0 advantage.
Nycreesha Ruffin opened up Southeast Lauderdale’s scoring by plating Malerie Thornton and herself courtesy of a two-run bomb to left centerfield to put the Lady Tigers ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first.
“I just tried to get my team pumped and ready, but things happen,” said Ruffin, who finished the contest 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. “But the season isn’t over. We’re going to overcome all of these mistakes, and I feel like we’re still going to get a ring.”
Madison McElroy RBI singled to score Sarah Davis, who walked, and Robbins netted two more Northeast Lauderdale runs with a two-RBI double in the top of the third. Kerrion Thedford knocked in Robbins via a Southeast Lauderdale fielding error, and the Trojans extended their lead to 5-2.
The Lady Trojans loaded the bases with no outs at the top of the fourth and were able to get runs from Jaylee Culpepper, Sarah Davis, Moore and Carrie-Grace Baty to take a 9-2 advantage.
“It’s always a challenge to play Southeast — we always usually get down the whole game, and come back in the last inning,” said Baty, who finished with a triple and two RBIs. “(Today), we did a really good job with getting ahead from the very beginning.”
Southeast Lauderdale’s Lauren Pickett plated Tajae Davis with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-3.
Ruffin notched her third RBI and Southeast Lauderdale’s fourth run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single to score Livia Satterfield.
Robbins scored her second run of the game in the top of the seventh to go along with a run by Thedford to round out Northeast Lauderdale’s scoring on the evening at 11.
“We swung at better pitches tonight and hit pitches early in the count,” Lady Trojans head coach Tyler Vick said. “Our girls, they just kept battling. We had a tough one (last) Thursday night — Meridian beat us. But, they just came back and fought. They never quit. They keep fighting. They were aggressive at the plate and hit better pitches for the most part.”
Caitlyn Manor added the Lady Tigers’ fifth run of the game on a knock from Nicole Bouldin in the bottom of the seventh.
“We were actually playing pretty good softball before Labor Day weekend, and we took Labor Day weekend off, and we haven’t played good softball since we’ve been back,” Southeast Lauderdale head coach Chris Harper said. “All we can do is keep working. We’re going to go back to work tomorrow. These girls are good kids, and they want to do well, so we’re just going to keep working.”
