Mississippi Power made two annual rate filings with the Mississippi Public Service Commission Tuesday.
The first filing is the annual rate review and contains the base costs the company incurs to continue providing customers with safe and reliable energy. Price, reliability and customer service are all measured under this plan. In this filing, the company will not seek a rate increase.
“Mississippi Power employees are meeting the challenge of managing business costs while providing industry-leading service and reliability for our customers,” Mississippi Power Chairman, President and CEO Anthony L. Wilson said. “This filing underscores our employees’ commitment to provide the safest, most reliable electric service to our customers every day.”
Customers have not seen a base rate increase since 2013.
In the second filing, the company’s annual fuel filing, Mississippi Power is seeking an increase of approximately $6.45 per month for a residential customer using 1,000 kWh of electricity a month. Customer impact will vary with usage.
This is the first time the company has requested a fuel increase since 2009.
Under Mississippi law, Mississippi Power’s fuel costs are recovered through a separate fuel adjustment filing. Each year the Public Service Commission adjusts Mississippi Power’s prices up or down to reflect the fluctuating costs of fuel. Mississippi Power’s fuel costs are recovered from
customers on a dollar-for-dollar basis and the company does not earn a profit on the fuel used to produce energy.
These filings must be reviewed and approved by the Public Service Commission.
