The Lady Knights scored seven goals in the first half and four in the second half, and the big lead allowed West Lauderdale to sub in its junior varsity later in the game in order to build depth. West Lauderdale head coach Alex George said he was happy to get the win Tuesday in advance of a big game Friday against Northeast Jones High School.
“It was a good start for opening conference (play),” George said. “I think we’re coming into our season a little bit and starting to get our continuity there. We put a lot of goals in the back of the net tonight, which gave me a lot of confidence going into this Friday’s contest with Northeast Jones.
“We came out on Northeast really early, scored two or three goals, ‘Bam, bam, bam,’ so I think all in all it was a good night. Our confidence right now is where it needs to be, and we’re just taking it one game at a time.”
West Lauderdale jumped ahead 1-0 in the third minute off a goal by Railey Mayatt. It scored again in the 12th minute on a goal by Lucy Green, and several minutes later, an assist by Mayatt set up a shot by Ember Temple to make the score 3-0. Caroline Green and Jada Smith added goals for West Lauderdale in the 22nd and 25th minute, respectively.
Mayatt would add her second goal of the night off an assist from Alice Williamson in the 28th minute, and Williamson scored a goal herself with just minutes left in the half to make it 7-0 West Lauderdale heading into intermission.
The Lady Knights added a goal almost immediately in the second half as Temple scored her second of the night in the 42nd minute. Temple would go on to get a hat trick after tallying her third goal in the 47th minute, and Kathryn Knuth rounded out West Lauderdale’s scoring with goals in the 44th and 55th minute, the latter of which came on a free kick.
