Like most Meridian Community College students, Enterprise resident Will Newman was eager to participate in Friday’s commencement.

He received his associate of applied science degree in Computer Programming. The College’s Computer Programming Technology is a two-year program that offers training in both traditional and web-based programming. “I had an interest in computers and seeing how they worked as well as discover what the programming aspects were and seeing how the applications were made,” Newman said as the reasoning why he chose to pursue this degree.

His interest in learning all about computers stemmed from when the 23-year-old was a child who, as he said, “had a habit of just playing video games.” “And I said, ‘hey, why not?’”

Newman added, “it goes into the philosophy of doing what you like.”

After graduating this semester, Newman has plans to continue his education at Mississippi State University. “I admit, I’m going to miss it (MCC). I have fond memories of this place; that’s what I’m going to take with me. It has been a blast here. I’d do it all over again if I had the opportunity.”

Newman credits instructors – specifically the Computer Programming instructors Curtis Beckman and Terry Cullum – for their help. “They have been helping me with different projects and they’ve given me advice to excel in this class.

“Without them, I really wouldn’t be here,” he added.

Beckman said Newman was helpful to them as well. “Will is absolutely the kindest soul I have ever had contact with. Will was always the one who would step in and participate when we were struggling.”
