MCC men, women sweep Faulkner State

The Meridian Community College basketball squads closed out the fall semester by playing host to Faulkner State Community College on Thursday night.

MCC came away with a doubleheader sweep on Thursday night as the Lady Eagles secured a 63-56 win, while the MCC men rolled past the Sun Chiefs by a final count of 91-75. 

The Lady Eagles secured their fifth straight win. MCC led 32-21 at the halftime break and never trailed in the second half to notch the home victory. Freshman Qiayon Bailey led the way in scoring for MCC with 11 points, and Jatiah Lathan added seven points off the bench in the victory. Former Meridian High star Kashari Gordon and Rokila Wallace each chipped in with six points apiece for the Lady Eagles.

The MCC men completed the sweep of Faulkner State. Sophomore Ashton Pierce led the MCC charge on the offensive side with 22 points, and sophomore DJ Mitchell also poured in 21 points to help pace the Eagles. Former Southeast Lauderdale High School product Johnny Knox also had a solid night with 10 points, and Mike Woodard added nine points in the winning effort.

The MCC women improved to 7-2 overall and the MCC men improved to 2-6 overall for the 2016-2017 regular season. MCC will take a long break for the holidays and will return to action on Jan. 5 against East Mississippi Community College at the Graham Gymnasium. The MCC women will take on the Lady Lions at 5:30 that evening, while the MCC men will battle the Lions at 7:30.
