The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department will investigate the death of an East Mississippi Correctional Facility inmate, the second death investigation at the facility this year.

Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said Jack Harvey, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and was transported to a local emergency department where he died.

“It is an ongoing investigation but there were no signs of trauma on his body,” Calhoun said.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections website, Harvey was convicted of 2011 charges for robbery, jail escape and grand larceny in Simpson County.

Calhoun said the state’s crime lab would conduct a toxicology report and perform an autopsy.

The investigation into the death of Joseph Gentry remains open, Calhoun said, because crime lab tests can take months and haven’t been turned over yet.

Gentry, 56, died on March 16 and was also found unresponsive in his cell.
