Policies a priory over symbols

The Flag.

As a historian I look at symbols and landmarks differently. I do want some physical reminders of history still intact because once they are gone then in a sense a part of history is, too. I want citizens old and young to visit as many historical landmarks possible this can serve as an aide in a deeper understanding of American history.

Those in support of the removal of the flag and other monuments please acknowledge that this can be a Catch 22. Once taken down it can start a chain reaction in which other landmarks may be asked to be removed. Including ones that you might cherish. Plus a symbol can be made out of anything tangible.

Now, supporters of the flag if this continues to be a heated discussion and causes public disunity, I would think that you would be the bigger person(s) and push for what’s best for the greater good of society. If the rest of the nation is moving forward with the removal then why not follow suite, or at least consider an alternative, such as a redesign of the flag.

In the end, I think it’s best for us to push to build a better community infrastructure and eradicate strategic policies that divide society. I would rather deal with symbols any day than unfair policies that were put into place. Changing policy should be our priority.

Thanks, Meridian for hospitality

My wife and I escaped Irma and landed in Meridian. We stayed in town for three days and found your beautiful town to be charming, friendly and oh so helpful.

It was a terribly trying time for us, but the kindness and outpouring of warmth by the citizens of Meridian was ever so helpful. From the hotel staff, Red Roof Inn….to the restaurant next door, to the park and the restaurants in town, Weidmann’s….as well as the gifts from the Central Baptist Church, were truly amazing and so very much appreciated.

It was heartwarming to see the outpouring of help that still exists in our great county, I thought we had lost that. Meridian was, and is a shining example of that spirit.

Thank you, Meridian and all the citizens in your fine community.

Use Kate Griffin school building

Regarding the courthouse, maybe the county could utilize Kate Griffin Junior High, which has plenty of room and parking. It’s close and easy to get to. It should be in pretty good condition and the maybe the city would offer it at a good price.

If nothing else, it could be a temporary fix while the courthouse gets a remodel. If they remodel the entire courthouse there would plenty of room since their only using less than half the building.

Close campaign finance loopholes

Russian trolls just spent at least $100,000 on political ads on Facebook during the 2016 election. This is a serious, serious issue and just the tip of the iceberg.

It is imperative that we close all campaign finance loopholes that give foreign governments and agents the opportunity to use shell corporations and political groups to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence our elections!
