Meridian Police Sgt. Dareall Thompson reminded citizens that two ordinances may interfere with plans for the holiday.

“Fireworks are not allowed in the city,” Thompson said, adding that an ordinance prohibited shooting handguns during the celebration as well. “If you shoot in the air, the bullet has to come down somewhere. Some people don’t realize that and it could hurt an innocent person.”

Thompson asked that those drinking over the holiday weekend find a designated driver as officers will be patrolling the city, searching for impaired drivers.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said deputies would also search for impaired drivers.

“We will be out in force throughout the weekend finding those that choose to be impaired and drive,” Sollie said.

Sollie added that fireworks, which the county allows, should be handled safely and in the presence of an adult.

“And as people drive throughout the weekend, don’t forget to buckle up,” Sollie said.
