Southeastern Grocers, which oversees chains such as Harveys Supermarket, Winn-Dixie and Fresco y M(a)s, announced it would be closing one of its two locations in Meridian Friday.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Drew Elkins, the Southeastern Grocers regional vice president, said in a statement.

The Winn-Dixie on Highway 45 North, next to Autozone, will close in June, according to the statement.

“Our associates are always the first to know of any changes at our stores and have been made aware of the closure and are encouraged to apply for open positions we have in our network of Winn-Dixie stores,” Elkins said in the statement.

Elkins said employees could transfer to the newly remodeled Winn-Dixie on Highway 39 North, only three miles north from the 45 North location.

This closure comes less than three weeks after the Walmart Neighborhood Market, approximately halfway between the two Winn-Dixie locations, opened on Highway 39 North.
