College baseball roundups: Southern Miss wins big in opener

Southern Miss began its weekend series against Florida International with a 15-4 blowout win in Friday night college baseball action.

Former Southeast Lauderdale standout Mason Irby was 4-for-6 with three RBIs for the Golden Eagles, and Dylan Burdeaux went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Matt Wallner was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Daniel Keating finished 2-for-5 and LeeMarcus Boyd went 2-for-5.
Kirk McCarty pitched seven innings for the Golden Eagles, surrendering four earned runs off six hits with six strikeouts.
OLE MISS 7, ALABAMA 2
Ryan Olenek went 2-for-4 for the Rebels, and Tim Rowe finished 2-for-2, as Ole Miss topped Alabama in an SEC weekend series opener.
James McArthur got the win for the Rebels, going seven innings and surrendering one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. The Crimson Tide’s Dylan Duarte suffered the loss, pitching five innings and giving up five runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
No one for Alabama had multiple hits.

KENTUCKY 5, MISSISSIPPI ST. 2
Mississippi State dropped its SEC weekend series opener against the No. 13-ranked Wildcats.
Cody Brown was the Bulldogs’ only multiple hitter, finishing 2-for-4. Jake Magnum had a double for Mississippi State.
Konnor Pilkington got the start for Mississippi State, going 6 2/3 innings and surrendering two earned runs on one hit with six walks and seven strikeouts. The game was tied 2-2 going into the ninth before Kentucky scored three runs in the top of the frame.
