Governor’s Cup: Mississippi State tops Ole Miss 4-2

Mississippi State took a 4-2 win against Ole Miss Tuesday evening in the annual Governor’s Cup at Trustmark Park in Pearl.

A Brent Rooker three-run home run to left center field in the bottom of the fifth proved the difference for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Ryan Gridley had an RBI single that drove in Rooker.

The Rebels scored both of their runs in the sixth inning, one on a Cooper Johnson single up the middle that scored Thomas Dillard and another when Tate Blackman had an RBI double to send home Johnson.

Rooker and Josh Lovelady were both 2-for-4 for Mississippi State, while Hunter Stovall finished 2-for-3. For Ole Miss, Will Golsan went 2-for-5, and Johnson was 2-for-4.

Denver McQuary got the win for Mississippi State, tossing 5 1/3 innings and surrendering two runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Riley Self got the save for the Bulldogs.

Greer Holton suffered the loss for Ole Miss, pitching six innings and giving up three runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Former West Lauderdale standout Will Stokes pitched an inning, striking out one.
