DECATUR — The East Central Community College Lady Warriors were solid in all three phases of the game Wednesday afternoon as they clobbered Hinds Community College 16-3 and 15-1 in a pair of five-inning MACJC Central Division softball games.

ECCC improved to 5-1 in the division and 22-3 overall with the sweep. Hinds fell to 2-2 and 17-17 with the two league wins coming against Holmes Community College.

The Lady Warriors hammered out 36 hits in the two games. The two ECCC pitchers threw 112 pitches, 89 of which were strikes. And the Lady Warrior defense committed only one error in 10 innings.

“I was impressed with the way we came out ready to play and hit the ball,” ECCC head coach Scott Hill said. “It takes a lot of pressure off your pitching and your defense when you can hit it like that. We’ve got some girls that are stepping up and really doing a good job offensively for us right now.”

The Lady Warriors struck for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning in winning the opener 16-3. Hinds trailed 11-0 before scoring all three of its runs in the top of the fourth.

Jennifer Smith had two doubles and a triple to lead the Lady Warrior offense. Dominique Mapp and Lauren White both had three singles. Erica Hardin and Joy Cavenaugh both had a single and a double, while Loren Kennedy, April Boyd and Allison McDaniel each had a pair of singles.

The Lady Warriors had only one error, while Hinds had five boots. The Lady Eagles had six hits.

Lindsey Smith (10-2) got the win, throwing 46 of her 54 pitches for strikes.

“That’s pretty efficient,” Hill said. “We’re getting really good performances out of our pitchers right now. They’re throwing a lot of strikes. When you play the kind of defense we’re playing right now, it takes a little pressure off you. You don’t feel like you have to be perfect out there. It all kinda goes hand in hand.”

In the second game, ECCC put up five runs in the second inning and added seven more in the fourth to go up 15-1. The Lady Warriors had 16 hits with Cavenaugh getting a double and a pair of singles. Kennedy and Hardin both had three singles. White and Jennifer Smith both had a pair of singles. Lindsey Smith and Tiffany Thomas had pinch-hit doubles in the seven-run fourth frame.

Christy Corley (9-1) got the win. She threw 58 pitches, 43 for strikes.

Hinds committed three errors, while ECCC had none. The Lady Eagles had three hits.

The Lady Warriors return to action Friday at Holmes.
