The world renowned Rust College A’Cappella Choir will perform at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 1400 Robinson Road, in Jackson.
An annual treat for the Jackson-Metro area, the choir will render several favored and time-honored selections of Negro spirituals, anthems and hymns. Admission is $5.
“Every year our guests say how much they look forward to the next performance,” said MeShonya Wren-Daniel, president of the Jackson-Hinds Chapter of the Rust College Alumni Club, which is sponsoring the event. “They love the rich performances and especially when the choir greets audience members as they fill the sanctuary with their harmonious voices.”
Led by director Zebedee Jones, the choir has been celebrated abroad in Africa and Europe as well as at home receiving the Mississippi Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts in 2003. The choir was founded in the early 1930s by Natalie Doxey, a Rust College graduate who taught music and served as the choir director until 1969.
The weekend of activities also gives the alumni chapter a chance to expose another generation of college students to the education and wonderful experiences Rust College has to offer, Wren-Daniel said. The club will also sponsor a Little Miss and Master Bearcat Pageant at 6 p.m. Saturday, at Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church for children ages 6 to 12. The theme “Start Young: Learning How to Achieve Beyond.” Admission is also $5.
