Carson Column: Annual meeting time is approaching

Both the Meridian Women’s Bowling Association and the Meridian Bowling Association will be getting down to business over the next couple of weekends with their Annual Meetings. The ladies will go first as they get together this Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rites Building located on the corner of 11th Street and 23rd Avenue. The guys will take their turn Saturday, May 6 at 7 p.m. at Western Sizzlin. All members are encouraged to attend their respective association meetings. Business to be conducted will include the election of officers and directors for next season and the distribution of city tournament awards and prize money. For more information ladies should contact Mary Formby or Jane Gibson while men should contact Ken Miller or Jason Pierce.
The 59th Annual Mississippi State Bowling Tournament will get underway this weekend at Hub Lanes in Hattiesburg. The tournament will run for six weekends before concluding June 4. Late entry is still available on a lanes available basis. Jackie Strange of Vicksburg is the tournament manager this year. He may be reached at 601-636-1262.
The Mississippi Women’s Bowling Association continues its nine weekend run through June 11 at Rivergate Bowl in Natchez. Congratulations go out to Mary Formby who was inducted into the Mississippi Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame at the statewide annual meeting on April 7. Mary has been very active at the statewide level in both the MWBA and Youth associations for many years and this honor is truly well deserved. Congratulations, Mary. We are all proud of you for your accomplishment.
Denise Rutledge stood a little taller in local league action last week by leading all the ladies with a whopping 661 series in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. Denise included games of 224 and 234 in the week’s high series. Kate Grant edged out Taneezia Cook for the high game last week with a nice 245 game, while, at the same time, reaching the 600 plateau with a 624. Other ladies posting some big games last week included Mary Copeland, Tandee Marx, Debbie Jones, Janice Kasper, Cathy Jones, Bettye Simmons, Lisa Rickloes, Mona McGrane and Eunice Dillard. Rounding out the news for the ladies was the rare triplicate achieved by Marion Wilhite while bowling in the Senior Citizens league.
Speaking of seniors, before he came down with a bad cold, Bob Timms pounded the younger set into submission by collecting both the high game and the high series for the week with a 278/691. Bob worked his magic will bowling in the Senior Non-Smoking league on Thursday afternoon. Don Sabella broke out of his slump with an impressive 269 game and 687 Thursday afternoon. Congratulations also go out to another senior bowler, Roger Pace, who strung strikes while on his way to earning an award for being 80 pins over his average.
