Two empty, covered grain hopper cars traveling on the Norfolk Southern line through Meridian derailed Monday morning.

According to Robin Chapman, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern, the two cars were being pulled by a Norfolk Southern engine when a misaligned track switch caused the two cars to jump the track.

“Thankfully, they were moving at a low rate of speed and the incident was not serious,” Chapman said. “There hasn’t been any word yet on how much damage the cars have sustained, though.”

Homeland Security Director Bunky Partridge said the cars were not carrying hazardous materials.

“They were carrying soybeans and that’s about it,” Partridge said.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Arundel Road and Airport Boulevard in Meridian. The cars were righted and the accident scene cleared by Monday afternoon.
