Delta State sweeps West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Delta State (11-6) pounded out 26 hits off of West Alabama pitching en route to taking the first two games of a three-game set with UWA on Saturday, winning by the scores of 7-2 and 9-5.
Bryan Williamson led all Statesmen hitters, going 4-for-7 on the day with a pair of RBI.
DSU jumped out 5-0 in the first game after six innings. West Alabama scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Delta answered with two of its own in the ninth inning to seal the victory. Rusty Rayborn (4-1) went nine solid innings for DSU, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits to go along with six strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
Matthew Creighton (2-2) went five innings for the Tigers, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits en route to taking the loss. William Crawford led West Alabama with a pair of hits and one run scored. Jacob Townsend and Chris Gilbertsen had one hit and one RBI each, while Dustin Roberts chipped in with a double.
In game two, UWA built an early 3-1 lead before Delta State used six hits to score six runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. Weast (2-0) earned the win, allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits, while Kyle Bridges picked up his first save of the season by recording the final out of the game.
R.J. Miller (2-1) took the loss in relief of starter Josh Allums. Miller allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits in 1.1 innings of work. Clark Humber went 2-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the UWA offense, while Clint Moody also added a pair of hits, including a double to go along with one RBI. Roberts and Gilbertsen added one hit and one RBI each for the Tigers.
Weast helped his own cause by picking up two more hits and one RBI. Tucker Bullard also turned in a big game, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Hunter Johnson and Brett Boykin added two hits each for DSU.
The Tigers move to 14-6 on the year. UWA and Delta State will close the three-game set on Sunday with a single game scheduled for 1 p.m., at Tartt Field.
