Clarkdale girls win pool in Tupelo tourney

The Clarkdale softball team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to old rival Mooreville and its ace Elizabeth Woolven Saturday, but the Lady Bulldogs still won their pool in the Cellular South High School Fast-Pitch Jamboree in Tupelo.

Clarkdale, which is now 6-1 on the season, knocked off South Panola 2-1 Friday night in the 28-team event. Saturday, coach Rick Roberson’s bunch won 5-0 over Pontotoc, lost 2-1 to Woolven and Mooreville, then whipped Hamilton 6-1 in the finale late Saturday night.

No other details were available before press time from the tourney, which also included Southeast Lauderdale.

Florence 2

The Lady Trojans got a big game from Shelley Odom as they improved to 5-1 with a win over division rival Florence Saturday.

Odom was 2-for-3 with an RBI offensively, and she also earned the win on the hill to improve to 5-1.

Brittany Ford added a pair of RBIs for the Lady Trojans, who are at Enterprise Monday.

Wayne County 4

The Lady Trojans banged out eight hits and run-ruled Wayne County for their second win of the day Saturday.

Northeast, now 6-1 overall, got a pair of hits from Meagan Cobb, who finished 2-for-4.

Lauren Zettler (1-0) got the win on the mound.

Ridgeland 6

The Lady Wildcats scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings to whip the Lady Titans in one of two wins for MHS Saturday.

E.T. Warren and J’Quandra Hickman banged out three hits apiece to lead the Lady Wildcats, while Artesian Boyd had a pair of hits.

Meagan Patton (2-0) earned the win on the mound.

Starkville 3

Meridian ran its record to 5-3 with the victory over the Lady Yellowjackets.

MHS was down 2-1 after one inning, but scored three times in the second and four times in the third to take an 8-2 lead.

Boyd had a triple and a single, J’Quandra Hickman had a double and two singles, Tiffany Hickman had three hits and Lindsay Lang had a pair of singles for MHS — which had 11 hits.

Ebonee Ball was the winning pitcher, as she allowed only one hit.

Meridian returns to action Monday at Southeast Lauderdale.

Taylorsville 2

The Lady Bulldogs scored three times each in the first and second innings to grab a 6-1 lead, then went off for five runs each in the third and fourth frames to blow their contest open.

Enterprise, which is 3-2, got three singles from Morgan Swancey and a home run from Paige Sheppard. Baleigh Volking, Kristin Gavin and Haley Brooke Smith all had two hits.

Gavin (1-2) also earned the win on the mound for Enterprise, which hosts Northeast Lauderdale Monday.

Newton County 5

Union 1

Kasie Buckley earned her first career win on the mound, scattering six hits and striking out eight in a complete-game effort as the Lady Cougars downed neighboring Union.

Newton County, which improved to 5-1, also got a three-run homer from Buckley and a single, homer and two RBIs from Chelsea Pugh. Kristen Pillsbury added an RBI single for the Lady Cougars.

Paige Holsen had two singles and Chasity Yates had a single and double for Union, which dropped to 2-1. Amber Smith (1-1) took the loss on the mound.

In a schedule switch, Newton County hosts Carthage in division action Monday.

West Lauderdale 13

Quitman 1

The Lady Knights erupted for nine runs in the third inning to break open a close game and knock off the Lady Panthers.

Josie Matthews had a grand slam homer in the nine-run rally, and she finished the contest 2-for-2.

Brooke Lee was the winning pitcher for West, which didn’t allow Quitman a run until the fourth frame of the rout-shortened contest.

West Lauderdale 4

The Lady Yellowjackets scored four times in the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie and knock off the Lady Knights in one of two games for each team Saturday.

Union out-hit West 10-2 in the matchup. Paige Holsen was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Summer Richardson and Kelsie Prather each had two hits.

West got one hit each from Matthews and Katie McAllister.

Chasity Yates (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Lady Jackets, while Katy Nabors took the loss for the 2-3 Lady Knights.

West Lauderdale hosts Florence in division action Tuesday.

Meridian 13

Quitman 1

The Wildcats scored at least two runs in all five innings of a rout-shortened win over the Panthers Saturday.

Meridian, which improved to 2-5, got a double and a single apiece from William Alexander and Clarke Bullock and a pair of doubles from Khairi Usher.

Dallas Hannah was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats, who outhit Quitman 9-3.

MHS is at Hattiesburg Tuesday.

Oak Mountain, Ala. 2

The Knights broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the second inning and coasted to a win over Oak Mountain in action played at Hillcrest in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Saturday.

Ashley Dougherty (2-0) struck out seven to get the win on the mound for West, which outhit Oak Mountain 12-4.

Austin Davis homered, doubled and singled, Drew Snider had a single and double, Tyler Vick had a double and two singles, Brock Mosley and Drew Snider both had a double and a single and Paxton Pace had a double.

In their second contest of the day Saturday, the Knights suffered their first loss of the season with a one-run setback at the hands of Spain Park of Birmingham, Ala.

West fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, then got single runs in the second and fourth frames as the Knights came up short and fell to 6-1.

Ricky Gardner was the tough-luck loser on the mound, as he struck out six and walked none. All three runs were unearned, as the Knights committed three errors.

Snider and Davis had the only hits for West, which will host Southeast Lauderdale Monday in a makeup contest.

Northwest Rankin 8

Newton County 3

The host Cougars fell to Class 5A powerhouse Northwest Rankin in non-division action Saturday at Decatur.

Newton County (6-3) matched Northwest Rankin with six hits each, but all-state performer Todd McInnis (3-0) still got the win for the 7-0 Cougars.

Anthony Doss was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, while Clint Woods and Wesley Johnson both had two hits and one RBI for NW Rankin.

Newton County got two hits and an RBI from Josh Pender, a single and RBI from Jared Cavenaugh and hits from Justin Farmer and losing pitcher Drew Wilson, who fell to 0-1.

The Cougars take on Morton Monday.

Newton County 5

In a late game from Friday, the Bulldogs pulled out a big win over Class 3A Newton County.

Enterprise scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and went up 5-3 with two runs in the sixth.

Blake Hennington (2-0) was the winning pitcher, as the Bulldogs improved to 3-3 overall.

Scott Moseley homered, while Chris Smith and Zach Taylor each had a single and double for Enterprise. Baron Blackwell and Kyle Hicks added doubles.

Jared Cavenaugh and Josh Sheehan both homered for Newton County, which fell to 6-2. Brandon Williams had two singles.

Morton 6

The Yellowjackets pulled out their second thriller in as many nights by edging host Morton Saturday.

Union was up 5-0 early, but Morton scored three times in the second and another in the third to pull within 5-4.

Jacob Massey (1-0) got the win on the mound and also had a pair of hits for Union, which is at home against Neshoba Central Monday in a makeup contest.

Ian Ferrell had a single and a double for for Union, Trey Sistrunk had two hits, Michael Graham had a double and Jacob Casey and Jamelle Blalock had a single apiece.

Philadelphia 15

In a late contest from Friday night, the Yellowjackets won a wild won at Philadelphia.

Union led 10-3 after three innings, only to see the host Tornadoes get as close as 13-10 one inning later in the seesaw affair.

Casey (1-1) was the winning pitcher and also had a single and double for Union, while Daniel Winstead had three singles and Ferrell had two doubles and a single.

Graham and Jess Brantley each had two singles, Blalock and Sistrunk had a single and double each, and Massey and Alex Deaton had one hit each.

Tuntdrick Burnside homered and Cody Bryan tripled to lead Philly. Bryan was also the losing pitcher.

Sumter Academy 11

West Ala. Prep 1

The Eagles got a big effort on the mound from Stephen Dennis, who struck out 10 and allowed just two hits to help Sumter improve to 3-2 on the season.

Caine Conway was 3-for-3 with a double to lead Sumter’s nine-hit attack, while Drew Stewart was 2-for-4.

Sumter got two runs in the first inning, then cracked the contest open with six runs in the second.

In a late game from Friday, the Eagles suffered a 10-run loss to Clarke Prep.

Patrick Castleman went four innings on the mound and was the losing pitcher, while Hunter Spidle had a pair of hits for the Eagles.

EMCC 5

The host Lions fell behind 4-0 in the first three innings and couldn’t quite complete the comeback in a loss to Jones County Junior College Saturday at Scooba.

EMCC, which is now 2-6, outhit the Bobcats 14-11 and lost despite a 3-for-5 effort from Jake Lee.

Chris Owens, A.J. Freeman and ex-Northeast Lauderdale standout Cory Chance all had two hits for the Lions, while Walt Love and Chase Goolsby each had one hit apiece.

Darrell Little was the loser on the hill for EMCC, which hosts Copiah-Lincoln Tuesday.

Forest 2

West took two doubles matches and got a big effort from Elliott Clark in boys singles to edge Forest.

Clark won 6-1, 6-1 in boys singles, while Jessie Fortson dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision in girls singles.

The girls doubles team of Morgan Roberts and Claire Massy won 6-1, 6-1, while the mixed doubles duo of Daniel Sosebee and Bliss Pigott won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. In boys doubles, Daniel Cook and Jeff Jones dropped a 7-6, 6-0 decision.

In action from Thursday, West topped New Hope in four of five matches.

Clark won 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in boys singles, while Roberts and Massy won by forfeit in girls doubles.

Fortson cruised 6-0, 6-0 in girls singles, and Sosebee and Pigott won 6-0, 6-0 in mixed doubles.

Cook and Jones dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision in boys doubles for West, which returns to action Tuesday at Kosciusko.

Quitman was victorious in four of five matches against rival Wayne County.

In boys singles, Ben Humphrey of Quitman knocked off Slade Gardner of Wayne 6-2, 6-1, while Quitman’s Martha Baldwyn won 6-0, 6-2 over Tiffany Hudson in girls singles.

In boys doubles, the Wayne County duo of Koby Palmer and Kendall Holifield captured a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nicholas Gunning and Ben Boudreaux.

Quitman’s Rachel Wheeler and Anna Dobbins won by forfeit in girls doubles, while Jared Smith and Emily Fleming won for the Panthers in mixed doubles — beating Alexander Sherman and Britton Baker 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.

Quitman is at Northeast Jones Tuesday.
