MLT Youth Division schedules tryouts for ‘Wizard of Oz’

The Meridian Little Theatre Youth Division will hold auditions for “The Wizard of Oz” next Sunday and Monday.

Heading the list of characters is Dorothy, who should be at least 11 years old or older. Girls trying out for Dorothy should have an “above average” vocal ability in range and voice control. Sheet music of the song will be available at the Theatre box office and may be picked up between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Scarecrow should be in the age range of 11 years old or older and should also have an “above average” vocal ability and also will need to audition with a song from the play. This music also will be available at the Theatre box office. This part could be a boy or girl.

The Tin man also needs to be 11 years of age or older and have an “above average” vocal ability and also will need to audition with a song from the play. This music is available at the Theatre box office. This part could also be a boy or girl.

The Cowardly Lion is also a part for an older child age 11 or older. The vocal ability should also be “above average” and will need to audition with a song from the play. The music may be picked up at the Theatre office. This part could be a boy or girl.

The Wizard needs to be an older boy, who must have a very strong speaking voice.

The Wicked Witch must be 11 or older and have a very strong speaking voice. We would like this character to also sing, but it is not a prerequisite.

The Good Witch (Glinda) must be 11 years old or older and must have an “above average” vocal ability and will also need to audition with a song from the play. This music is available at the Theatre box office.

Farmhands, Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, Oz guide, Oz Ladies, and the Doorman can be in the 10 and older range. There also are parts of the Mayor, Mayor’s wife, Coroner, Barrister and City Fathers. These roles are available for children 8 years old and up.

Roles for the younger children will include: Lollipop Guild, Munchkins/Townspeople, Lullaby League. Roles for older students will include, Seamstresses, Polishers, Beauticians and Barbers.

The Flying Monkeys will be performed by gymnasts. Those interested in trying out for these roles should be seasoned gymnasts. No beginners or first-year students will be allowed to audition for these roles. This is a very fast-paced and difficult routine that will require experienced gymnasts for these roles.

“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed Jan. 8-14, for local area school students. On Saturday, Jan. 13 and Sunday Jan. 14, the musical will play to the general public.
