Cougars roll to eighth straight

From the opening kickoff it was evident that Old Dominion Christian would be no match for Calvary Christian School Thursday night.
After letting the ball bounce around a couple of times on that kickoff, Johnathan Bartlett picked it up and went untouched for a 90-yard touchdown as the Cougars (8-2) cruised to a 58-14 win.
Justin Sylvester scored the two-point conversion to put CCS up 8-0 with only 25 seconds off the clock.
Old Dominion answered with its longest drive of the night — which included passes of 22 and 13 yards, as well as 17 rushing yards — but failed on a fourth-down attempt from the Calvary 33.
OD quarterback Will Cain was being sacked — and facing away from the line of scrimmage — when he threw the ball backwards. He was called for intentional grounding, giving Calvary the ball at the Old Dominion 49.
“We were rusty at first,” said first-year Calvary coach Kirby Newell. “We haven’t played in two weeks and it showed in the first quarter. We sputtered a little bit, but once we got into a little rhythm everything was ok.”
The Cougars took advantage of the good field position and scored five plays later. The big play on the drive was a 36-yard pass from Kyle Koch to Desmond Grayson that put CCS in the red zone.
Koch ran in the Cougars’ second TD of the night from the 7-yard line. On the two-point conversion attempt, he completed a pass to Zach Carpenter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Newell’s club caught the Old Dominion returners off guard with an onside kick attempt, which Koch recovered.
Five plays later, Koch tossed a 23-yard scoring strike to Bartlett. The touchdown was set up by a 12-yard run by offensive lineman Cory Holdiness, who lined up as the quarterback in the shotgun.
Koch and Carpenter again hooked up on the two-point conversion to put the Cougars up 24-0 with less than 10 minutes taken off the game clock.
After a three-and-out by OD, Calvary took over near midfield.
Koch hit Bartlett for a 23-yard pickup on a third-and-6 and followed it up with a 20-yard pass to Holdiness, who rumbled down to the 5-yard line. On fourth-and-goal from the 2, Holdiness capped the drive with a score— again lining up at QB.
Old Dominion’s Cain connected with Tristen Williams for a 27-yard gain to the Calvary 20, but the Cougar defense came up with a turnover.
Two plays after a false start had OD backed up to the 25, Cain was looking for a man down the left sideline, but instead found Bartlett — who picked it off after tipping it three times to himself.
The Cougars would give it right back as Steven Alston intercepted Koch and returned it 38 yards into CCS territory. A sack on fourth down put the ball back in the hands of Koch.
The junior quarterback wasted no time putting Calvary back on the board. He hit Bartlett and Sylvester on back-to-back passes of 22 and 23 yards, respectively. The latter went for a touchdown.
On a play that was called in as “Senior play” by Newell, seniors Corey Gault and Mo Dale lined up in the backfield for the two-point conversion attempt. Gault was stopped on the run, leaving the Cougars with a 38-0 lead with a minute and a half to play before halftime.
The onside kick attempt by Dale took a backwards bounce and was recovered by Old Dominion at the Calvary 37-yard line — a net loss of 3 yards.
A 26-yard pass from Cain to Alston put OD just outside the 10-yard line. The visitors would score four plays later when Cain ran in from 7 yards out with 19 seconds left before the intermission.
Cain looked to be stopped on the two-point conversion for a big loss, but slipped four tackles before crossing the goal line. Calvary led 38-8 at halftime.
The Cougars recovered another onside kick to start the third quarter as Koch came up with the ball on a pooch kick.
On the first play from scrimmage, he hit Grayson on a slant. The eighth-grader took it 39 yards to the Old Dominion 7.
The Cougars again found themselves facing a fourth-and-goal and again found six points. Koch kept the ball and went in from 4 yards out. Eric Sims took the end around and scored the two-point conversion.
The ensuing drive resulted in a turnover as the ball was snapped over the head of Cain on a fourth-and-11. Gault pounced on the ball at the OD 42-yard line.
“Our defense has really come a long way since the Calhoun game (on Oct. 3),” Newell said. “It has made us a total team.”
On the very next play, Sims took the handoff, made a few cuts and scored the seventh touchdown of the night for Calvary. Kaleb Watts two-point conversion attempt failed.
Old Dominion responded with a 13-yard touchdown reception by Dontavious Jordan, making the score 52-14.
The final touchdown of the night came when Dale took a quarterback sneak 6 yards, his extra point attempt was wide left.
The score was set up by four big plays by Koch. First he intercepted Jordan to give the Cougars possession.
On their drive, Koch ran for 11 yards and was 2-of-3 passing for 61 yards.
The Cougars ended the night with 438 yards, 268 coming through the air.
“We were fortunate that Old Dominion came down to play us,” Newell said. “But I just hate to see the season end.”
There is a chance that the Cougars could end up with a season-ending bowl game if Kemper Academy knocks off North-Division leading Central Academy tonight in DeKalb.
