A Meridian police officer was wounded Thursday in an afternoon shooting at Meridian Police Department on 22nd Avenue.
At a press conference Thursday night, Meridian Police Chief Deborah Naylor Young said the shooting took place shortly after 4 p.m. Two people were injured in the incident, she said.
“The shooting involved a Meridian police officer and a suspect that was in custody,” she said. “Both were transported to a local hospital by Metro (Ambulance) with gunshot wounds.”
Det. Chanetta Stevens, who serves as public information officer for MPD, said both the officer and suspect were in stable condition, and their injuries were not considered life threatening.
In a news release, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is the agency investigating the shooting, said the police officer was bringing the suspect to a court hearing when the suspect got ahold of a gun and shot him. A second officer then shot the suspect.
Young said she wanted to thank the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department and MBI for helping MPD to secure the scene following the shooting.
“Counseling will be provided to our officers here at Meridian Police Department,” she said.
